YA Graphic novels

I'm looking over an assortment of graphic novels. They are hard for me to get into, even though I used to read a lot of comic books as a kid. My husband glanced at them and said that the people all looked angry - maybe because of the intensity of the black and white color scheme and the angularity of characters' mouths and speech balloons.

I started with a Japanese book about a little girl - SUBA&! It was really difficult to follow. A frame would have multiple speech balloons and only one character. Sometimes you had to look down to find the next frame instead of reading them in a straight line. And I also had a problem connecting the Japanese names with the right characters. (So I can sympathize with non-English speakers a bit) Since the little girl main character seemed to be very demanding and not interesting to me, I gave up.
